Flexible Machining Centers
Flexible Machining Systems (FMS) have been called the future of contract precision machining. An FMS is basically one or more machining centers linked to a computerized multi-pallet system with robotic loading capabilities. The beauty of FMS is its ability to maintain simultaneous multiple setups for a wide variety of machined components. The parts to be machined are loaded onto the tooling via one or more load stations, and programmed to be machined in a predetermined sequence. FMS runs twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, and achieves a level of efficiency for that is virtually unequaled. FMS also provides the ability to produce a machined component very quickly because the setup is already done. Very few small to mid-size contract manufacturers have FMS capabilities.
